International competition of theatrical texts

The I INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION OF THEATRICAL TEXTS  is announced, promoted by Fundación SMEDIA with the aim of promoting literary creation oriented to theatrical performance and encouraging the talent of its creators.

The jury will choose the best among the texts submitted, written in English, French and Spanish, with a free theme, original and unpublished, both from the point of view of its literary values and its suitability for stage representation.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

ARTICLE 1. Purpose
The purpose of the I INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION OF THEATRICAL TEXTS is to promote literary creation oriented to theatrical performance and encouraging the talent of its creators.

The jury will choose the best among the texts submitted, written in English, French and Spanish, with a free theme, original and unpublished, both from the point of view of its literary values and its suitability for stage representation.

ARTICLE 2. Requirements for participants.
Any natural person from anywhere in the world may participate in this call for entries, provided that he/she is the author of the work submitted.

Co-authored works will be admitted.

ARTICLE 3. Amount of the Prize.
The Prize is €3,000 (three thousand euros) and will be subject to the corresponding income tax withholding.

ARTICLE 4. Requirements of the works competing for the Award.
Authors may participate with a maximum of one play. The works submitted must be one hundred percent original and must not have been published or performed in whole or in part in any theater.

The theme is free, with a minimum length that allows a staging of at least seventy minutes.

The text may be written in English, French and Spanish.
It must not have been published in any format (paper or digital).
It must not have been previously awarded in any other contest.
It must not have been premiered for commercial purposes.

If between the deadline for submission and the awarding of the prize, any of the competing authors should win another prize in another literary contest with the same work submitted for this prize, he/she must notify this in writing to the Fundación Smedia so that the Jury does not take it into consideration in its decision.

ARTICLE 5. Acceptance of the conditions of the call.
Participation in this call for entries implies the acceptance of all of its conditions by the candidates. By submitting the work, the author undertakes to guarantee its authorship and originality.

ARTICLE 6. Deadlines for submission.
The deadline for the submission of applications to participate shall be from January 31, 2024.

ARTICLE 7. Place of presentation.
The works shall be submitted by email to the Fundación Smedia info@fundacionsmedia.org with the following subject: I INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION OF THEATRICAL TEXTS.

ARTICLE 8. Documentation to be submitted by participants.
It will only be necessary to submit the corresponding work, in PDF format. This file will have the following name: «I INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION OF THEATRICAL TEXTS. Title and Author of the play”. In addition, a description of all the characters in the work, as well as a brief synopsis of the work, must be included at the beginning of the text. The author’s contact information must also be included.

ARTICLE 9. Composition and performance of the Jury.
The evaluation of the works submitted will be carried out by a Jury with the following composition:
President: Enrique Salaberría Folgado
Members: two, to be chosen by the Smedia Foundation.
The Jury will be assisted by the Director of the Fundación Smedia as secretary, although she will not be a member of the Jury.

The decisions of the Jury will be adopted by majority vote and will be reflected in the minutes of the corresponding session.

The Jury may only propose one winning work.

If the Jury considers that the works presented do not reach the minimum quality required, it may declare the prize, the edition and the performance of the work void.

ARTICLE 10. Evaluation criteria for the awarding of the Prize.
The main evaluation criteria will be the scenic potential of the text and its positive contribution to the current theatrical panorama.

ARTICLE 11. Award procedure.
The prize shall be paid by bank transfer to the account indicated by the beneficiary. The amount will be subject to the corresponding income tax withholding, in accordance with the provisions of current legislation.

The awarded author must attend the public event that the Smedia Foundation may organize in this regard.

 

ARTICLE 12. Commitments and assignment of rights.
Fundación Smedia, through Grupo Smedia, reserves the right to carry out the edition and/or production and representation of the awarded play. In this sense, the author, with the acceptance of these rules, will cede his rights for the eventual editions and/or specific representations.

Participants, by entering this competition, fully accept these rules, as well as the decisions of the Jury and authorize the Fundación Smedia to disseminate information about the Prize, including professional data and/or photographs of the winner(s).

Participants exempt Fundación Smedia from any liability arising from plagiarism or any other violation of current legislation that may be incurred by any of the participants.

ARTICLE 13. Return of non-awarded works.
Since this call for entries must be submitted in PDF format, non-winning entries will be eliminated after the publication of the award of the Prize.

ARTICLE 14. Other stipulations.
The deadline for the submission of texts shall end on January 31, 2024, at 24:00 hours.

Fundación Smedia does not acquire, by virtue of this Award, any direct or subsidiary responsibility in relation to the execution and development of the Award other than that detailed in this document.

In the event of any claim or dispute, both the participants and the organization shall submit to the jurisdiction of the city of Madrid, waiving any other jurisdiction to which that may correspond to them.
